Question: I’ve Just Decided to Learn Korean, Where Do I Start?

Great! You’re in for a long, but enjoyable ride. So where to begin?

I would first focus on getting Hangul (한글) down pat. If you put in a solid few hours of work, you’ll learnt it in no time and be much better off in the long run. I used Yes! You Can Learn Korean Language Structure in 40 Minutes which provided a good explanation, but you certainly do need to buy a book, there are plenty of online resources (see Korean Wiki Project and Learn Korean Language).

I practised Hangul by repeatedly creating tables like this:

Got it? Awesome. Next get familiar with the resources out there, have a poke around and pick what looks good for you.  My recommendation would be perhaps starting with an online program such as Talk to Me in Korean or Sogang Korean Program in combination with a textbook (Monash University offers a free downloadable option).

Don’t be afraid to mix it up and find what works for you – there isn’t one set way to learn a language. Now go and start learning!
