Verb stems ending in ‘ㅂ’

When changing verb stems ending in ‘ㅂ’ to conversational form, the following rule applies:

  1. If the vowel before ㅂ is 오, change ㅂ to 오
  2. If the vowel before ㅂ is something else, change ㅂ to 우

Examples
돕다 –> 도와요    to help
어렵다 —> 어려워요 to be difficult
눕다 —> 누워요 to lie down
밉다 —> 미워요 to dislike, hate
아름답다 —> 아름다워요 to be beautiful

Note that there are exceptions to this rule also, such as:
입다 to wear
잡다 to catch
씹다 to bite
